Parents\/carers remain responsible for children\/young people\u2019s welfare throughout all interaction with the organisation. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">This Safeguarding policy also applies to those adults who may be deemed vulnerable and who may be suffering due to neglect (including self-neglect) or abuse and are not able to be empowered to make decisions for themselves. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">If any person has any safeguarding concerns about the conduct of anyone volunteering with Family Roots this should be raised with Graham Upton, Vice Chair and Safeguarding Contact or any member of the Committee.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Forms of Abuse<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Physical abuse<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Emotional abuse<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Sexual abuse<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Neglect<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Individuals working with\u00a0Family Roots need to be alert to the potential abuse of children both within their families and from other sources including abuse by members of the organisation. There is an expected responsibility to respond to any suspected or actual abuse of a child in accordance with these procedures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It is good practice to be as open and honest as possible with parents\/carers about any concerns. However, you\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>MUST NOT\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">discuss your concerns with parents\/ carers if you suspect parents or immediate family to be involved in abuse or neglect of the child and\/or to do so would place a child, yourself or others at immediate risk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Vulnerable Adults<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Adults might be considered at risk if they are aged 18 years or over and:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">have needs for care and support (whether or not the local council is meeting any of those needs) and;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">are experiencing, or are at risk of, abuse or neglect; and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">as a result of those care and support needs either are unable to protect themselves from the risk of, or the experience of abuse or neglect.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Guidance on recording abuse<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A safeguarding concern could come to your attention via a variety of means. You might observe something, someone might disclose an allegation of abuse about themselves or someone else, or someone might report something to you that they have seen or suspected.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>You should not in any circumstance tell someone that you will keep a disclosure a secret,\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">as you have a legal and moral obligation to report any concerns that you have.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Be a reassuring presence.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One of the most important steps you can take to help children or vulnerable people is to reassure them that they are safe and that they have done the right thing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>2. Recording and reporting<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You may need to record an incident that you have observed or that someone else has reported or note down a disclosure prior to notifying the\u00a0Family Roots<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Safeguarding Contact.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Never promise that you will keep it a secret.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ensure you inform anyone about to give you information that you will share it with the relevant people to ensure the safety of everybody involved.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Key information to record:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>date, time and location\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">your notes were taken.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Make sure you record the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>identity of the person\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">supplying the information, or the identity\/description of the subject of your observations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Record as much\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>factual information\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">about the incident, report or concern as possible. Take care to only record what is said or what is observed \u2013 do not draw conclusions or include your opinions in your report.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Record any\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>action that you took\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">as a result of the report or observation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Family Roots<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">is committed to the principles wherever possible of empowerment for vulnerable persons at risk and to making safeguarding personal, ensuring that they are asked what they want to happen following a concern, that their wishes are taken into account and they are informed of actions being taken). Wherever possible adults should be\u00a0empowered\u00a0to\u00a0take action on their<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b> own behalf.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Reporting a safeguarding concern<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">If you suspect that a young person or vulnerable adult is at risk of harm or is the victim of abuse, you must report it as soon as possible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In the first instance, unless someone is at immediate risk of harm, please report all safeguarding concerns to the Family Roots Safeguarding Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/eastbournefhs.org.uk\/wp\/?page_id=1954\">Graham Upton<\/a> or by contacting the Society. All Safeguarding concerns will be treated seriously, and information will be shared with others on a need to know basis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Consulting with or making a Referral to East Sussex Children\u2019s Services<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In an emergency, call 999.
